 Maria - Acrylic

This painting is dedicated to Maria Cunitz/Cunitia a remarkable woman from the 1600s. Despite facing societal restrictions that limited women's access to education, Maria defied the odds and became an expert in astronomy. The big star in the painting symbolizes Maria, while the lips represent her strength, resilience, determination, and rebellion. Although she was not given the credit she deserved at the time, she is remembered and celebrated today.

Cunitia was an accomplished German astronomer, and one of the most notable female astronomers of the modern era. She authored a book Urania propitia, in which she provided new tables, new ephemera, and a more elegant solution to Kepler's problem.

The Cunitz crater on Venus is named after her. The minor planet

12624 Mariacunitia is named in her honour.
